Ash Overview
Fraxinus excelsior is more commonly known as Ash, Common Ash or European Ash. It is a deciduous tree species from the Oleaceae family, commonly seen across the UK. It has a vigorous habit, easily reaching 35m tall. The bark is coloured light brown-grey, developing grooves with age. The leaves dark green, oval in shape and oppositely arranged on stems, appearing from velvety, black buds after the flowers. This tree produces small purple flowers in clusters, in spring, before the leaves. They are wind-pollinated, leading onto winged fruits from late summer.
