Iceberg Lettuce Overview

An easy growing salad vegetable that can be grouped into four types: crispheads, butterheads, cos and loose-leaf lettuces. Iceberg is a heading lettuce with a mild flavour and crunchy texture. Wonderful to use fresh in salads to add a healthy crisp delight to your meal.

Common problems with Iceberg Lettuce

Slugs and snails feed on the heads at night which results in ragged, chewed leaves and weak plants. Use commercial slug traps and bait or you can pick the slugs off the plant by hand. Keep the leaves dry to prevent rotting.

How to harvest Iceberg Lettuce

Lettuce heads can be picked 50 - 60 days after sowing. When cutting, remove the entire head at the base, the outer leaves may be loose, but the inner head should feel tight and firm. Once the head bolts (flowers), the lettuce taste bitter. Any stress (mostly dry and heat) can also lead to bitterness! Soak the leaves in salt water to help recover crispiness after picking and remove any critters.

How to propagate Iceberg Lettuce

Sow direct or indoors. Sow seeds shallowly and 5 cm apart. Germination takes 7-14 days. Sow during Summer.
