Genus with around 145 species of small shrub and sub-shrubs with woody stems and a generally upright growth habit. Some species grow prostrately along the ground and most are highly aromatic. This genus is favoured for essential oil production. Foliage varies across species but is generally oppositely arranged and simple in appearance. Flowers appear in terminal clusters, typically coloured white, pink, red or purple, with 5 petals.
