Elaeagnus pungens Overview
The most common species is a frost-hardy, evergreen bush. Has long and prickly, horizontal branches. Oval leaves are glossy dark green above and silvery beneath. In autumn it bears small, fragrant, bell-shaped, silvery white flowers. Will grow to a height of about 3.5m and a spread of about 6m. Among a number of cultivars with variegated foliage are 'Aurea', with leaves having a wide irregular margin of golden yellow. Excellent for hedges.
