Heart-Leaf Philodendron Overview
Philodendron hederaceum is also known by the names Heart-Leaf Philodendron and Sweetheart Plant. These common names are confusingly shared with a related species, Philodendron cordatum. However, these are distinct plants and originate from different areas of the world. This species originates from Central America and parts of the Caribbean and is a commonly grown houseplant in many places, including the UK. Historically, this species was known as Philodendron scandens, however this name is now considered a synonym and is no longer commonly used. It is an evergreen climber that can reach 4m in height, given ideal growing conditions. It has slender-pointed, heart-shaped, waxy green leaves measuring up to 30 cm long. Mature plants may produce green and white flower spathes, measuring around 15cm in length. Toxic to both humans and pets. Can also be a skin irritant.
