Strawberry Begonia Overview

Saxifraga stolonifera is a herbaceous perennial species from the Saxifragaceae family. This attractive plant is semi-evergreen when grown under glass and reaches an average height of around 30cm. Native to China, Japan and Korea, this plant is now grown around the world as an ornamental species for its flowers and foliage, it is also a popular houseplant. It is commonly known by the names Creeping Saxifrage, Strawberry Saxifrage and Strawberry Begonia, amongst others. It produces long, slim, red stolons and rounded, hairy foliage measuring 10cm across, in good sunlight they may take on an attractive pink colouration. Leaves have silver veins on the upper surface and red-brown colouring on the underside. Flowers are delicate, showy, highly ornate and coloured white. The flowers are arranged on branched inflorescences called panicles. The blooms have 2 main white petals on the lower side, which are significantly larger than the other 3 petals, these are reduced in size and have yellow and/ or pink patterning on their inner surfaces.
