Leaden Bladderwort Overview
Utricularia livida is an attractive terrestrial species in the carnivorous bladderwort family, Lentibulariaceae. It is found naturally in temperate South Africa and feeds on minute microorganisms through the use of specialised bladder-like structures in the leaves for trapping live insect prey, it is thus termed insectivorous. These traps are considered one of the most sophisticated structures in the plant kingdom. Leaves are kidney-shaped and distinctive spurred and 2 lobed flowers are white with pale purple markings on the lower lobes. The flowers resemble those of Snapdragons, this species is popular with carnivorous plant enthusiasts.
