Kowhai Overview
Sophora is a genus containing 61 small deciduous tree and shrub species in the pea family, Fabaceae. This genus is widely distributed and many of these species have a long use in traditional Chinese medicine. Some of these plants are native to New Zealand where they are known by their Maori name Kōwhai. Some are popular houseplants. Species from the related genus Styphnolobium are often incorrectly called Sophora.
