Spruces Overview
Picea is a genus of 30-40 coniferous evergreen trees with whorled branches, a conical habit and needle-shaped leaves arranged singly around the shoots, and with narrow cones near the ends of these. Picea plants are commonly known as Spruces. They are native to the subarctic and northern temperate regions. Well-known members of the genus include Picea abies, or the Norway Spruce – which are grown as Christmas trees. They are also used as specimen trees, shelter planting and there are some dwarf varieties too. Pine oil in needles can be toxic to pets.
