Cannabis Overview
The number of species contained by this genus is disputed (between 1 and 3), the most common being Cannabis sativa. Both industrial hemp and the drug known as cannabis are produced from it. Its leaves are serrated and palmate in shape. It is an annual broadleaf plant with a taproot and is capable of very rapid growth under ideal growing conditions. Cannabis can be used as a herb and is famous for containing the psychoactive component THC, but other distinct strains bred from this species have other unique biochemical compositions and uses. Hemp has lower concentrations of THC and higher concentrations of CBD, which decreases its psychoactive effects. Cannabis has both medical and recreational uses. This plant has legal restrictions which vary across different countries. Current legislation prohibits the cultivation, possession and trade of cannabis in the UK.
