Elephant's Ear Plant Overview
Alocasia is a genus with around 65 species in the Araceae family. It contains the well-known Elephant's Ear Plant, a widely cultivated houseplant for its large, striking, veined, arrow-shaped foliage, measuring 20–90 cm long. Species in this genus are perennial and generally broad-leaved. They originate from tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and East Australia. Growth is rhizomatous or tuberous and evergreen. Flowering can occur in any season, under the correct conditions of high humidity and bright indirect sunlight. The inconspicuous flowers are arranged in a spadix, a spike of small flowers around a fleshy centre with a spathe surrounding.
