Hard Ferns Overview

Blechnum is a genus consisting of over 140 herbaceous, rhizomatous, evergreen or semi-evergreen ferns with some tree fern species growing up to 3m tall. They have attractive, divided, leathery foliage and this genus is distinguished from most other ferns by possessing separate sterile fronds for photosynthesis and fertile fronds for reproduction on the same plant. Blechnum plants are commonly known as Hard Ferns. Their range extends across most of the globe, with most species found in the tropical Southern Hemisphere and fewer found with increasing distance from the equator toward the poles. Several species from this genus are grown as ornamental garden plants.
