Imperata is a genus containing around 11 deciduous, rhizomatous, perennial grass species from the Poaceae family. These plants are native to tropical and subtropical regions of the world. They have flat, linear leaves and erect stems bearing silky inflorescences. Some species are cultivated as garden ornamentals, for example, cultivars of Imperata cylindrica, that have bright red leaves and are commonly known as Japanese Bloodgrass.
