Flowering Ferns Overview
Osmunda is a genus containing around 15 species of large temperate-zone ferns in the Osmundaceae family with a cosmopolitan distribution. Osmunda plants inhabit wet areas and are characterised by their tall, arching compound fronds bearing spores that ripen to a golden colour giving the illusion that the ferns are in flower, hence the common name Flowering Ferns. Some species, notably Osmunda regalis, the royal fern, are popular in cultivation, where they prefer a wet site and partial shade.
