Tatton Park

Knutsford

50 acres of gardens, 1000 acres of landscaped parkland and an elegant 18th century mansion – welcome to Tatton Park, one of the best days out in Cheshire. Highlights include the beautiful Japanese, Italian and rose gardens, historic walled kitchen gardens, arboretum and an adventure playground. Among the largest and most spectacular gardens in the Northwest, Tatton Park is a place where history springs into life. The gardens today are an almost exact replica of how they existed in Edwardian times. And with so many different areas to explore, there is something for every season: the cherry blossom and bluebells in April and May, the fragrant roses in high summer and the reds and golds of the Japanese Acers in the autumn. Year-round exhibitions in Tatton Park’s mansion reveal its noble past, while the old stables have been converted to a cosy café. Pick up seeds from the Garden Shop and take Tatton Park’s own produce home from the Housekeeper’s Store for dinner. The highlight of the year-round event calendar is the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park in July, when the garden is bursting with colour.

Combermere Abbey

Nantwich

Combermere Abbey, situated on the shores of a large mere in Cheshire and set in 1000 acres, was originally a cistercian Monastery dating from 1133, became a Tudor Manor and then re-modelled in 1820 in the Gothic style for Viscount Combermere, one of Wellington’s favourite generals. The Abbey’s Walled Gardens, with their magnificently restored Glasshouse, are open for guests to enjoy. You can stroll through 'The Pleasure Garden' and 'The Garden Wood' leading down to the mere with stunning parkland views.

Altogether there are a 3000 trees and shrubs at the Jodrell gardens. These form the Lovell Tree Collection, which was started by Sir Bernard Lovell in 1972, and opened to the public in 1976. Trees, seeds, and plants were gifted to Sir Bernard on many of his visits to observatories, universities and space projects around the world.

Lane End Cottage Gardens

Lymm

This former nursery in the heart of Cheshire might not have been worth the stop off when it was overrun with polytunnels but its reincarnation into a beautiful wildlife garden has certainly put Lane End Cottage Gardens on the map. Not least because these grounds are a hive of activity, hosting a vast array of family-focused events throughout the year. Past open days have included mosaic courses, flower crown making workshops and woodworking. This characterful garden goes out of its way to attract wildlife, which means butterflies, birds and dragonflies dance along the pathways alongside the odd resident cat. As the garden is only open once a month (usually the second weekend of every month), the flora and fauna get free reign for most of the year with minimal interference from people. But that doesn’t mean its human visitors aren’t looked after. Tea, coffee, and an enticing platter of sweet treats can be taken at the greenhouse.
