About the garden

Otley Hall is a Moated Tudor Hall from the 15th century that is Grade I listed. Many rooms at have remained untouched for 500 years, making it the oldest home in Suffolk to have survived largely intact.

The 10-acre grounds exhibit an outstanding blend of wild and formal characteristics. With vivid borders, woodland sections, attractive water features, and references to medieval style throughout, they give visitors a genuine feast for the senses.

The H-shaped Canal and Mount were influenced by the ideas of the famed Edwardian landscape gardener, Francis Inigo Thomas. Sylvia Landsberg, garden historian and author of "The Medieval Garden," designed the lovely Elizabethan-style Knot Garden, traditional Herber, and Orchard. In 2009, a magnificent Labyrinth modelled after the one in Chartres Cathedral was also created in the grounds here.

There are an enticing variety of various settings to explore, with the added bonus of the possibility of running into one of the Hall's majestic Indian Blue or White Peacocks. Take a walk through the forested sections filled with birdsong, tour the labyrinth, or climb the grassy slope for a breathtaking view of Otley Hall's gardens.

The gardens are home to a variety of species, and conservation is a priority at Otley Hall. To conserve the natural habitats of native flora and animals, special care has been made to foster the growth of wildflowers and hedgerows, and current efforts include expanding the woody areas as woodland to sustain additional biodiversity.

We went to visit the garden... past its best in October however very pleasantly surprised by Martha's Barn. The menu is one of those where you want to try everything... and the home made cakes were spectacular. Mostly vegetarian dishes, but also home made sausage roll and a slow cooked chicken dish... so still something for the carnivore. Great atmosphere and great food. Somewhere for a slightly indulgent (soup, sausage roll and sticky date and orange cake in my case) but not too expensive lunch. Will go again.

Martha's Barn cafe is in the grounds of Otley Hall in very tranquil surroundings. Wide range of breakfast, brunch and lunch choices, mainly vegetarian. Lovely cakes, scones and sausage rolls. A thoroughly relaxing hour over a coffee. Polite, friendly, service.

Stunning place. Lovely food. Sadly, we must have been there a bad day...surly service and no lunch menu to 3pm on that Saturday even though we'd rung in the morning to check and they'd said there would be savory food to 3pm. The staff could not have cared less that we'd travelled an hour/ our guests from London. Such a shame as it is worth all the rave reviews for the food and surroundings. As I say, probably just an unfortunate day.

I would say this is quite expensive for a family considering the size of the gardens, however it all appears very well maintained and there is a lovely cafe, fantastic cakes and coffees. Will come back to try out the menu at some point!
