About the garden

Home to the van der Spuy family since 1941, the iconic Old Nectar manor house, located just 5km from the heart of Stellenbosch, combines Cape Dutch 18th and 19th-century atmosphere with 21st-century comfort. Nestled between the large 200-year-old oak trees, the Manor House is complemented by five newly renovated, fully furnished self-catering villas, ensuring a unique stay at Old Nectar.

The gardens at Old Nectar are something to behold. The highlights include some of the following: a round rose garden, a pergola garden, a waterfall garden and an indigenous garden.

The Front Garden extends from the manor house downslope to the pergola. Terraced lawns with flanking paths and borders of azaleas and other flowering shrubs lead to a rectangular Victorian-tiled ornamental pond overlooked by two sentinel Lombardy poplars (Populus sempervirens) and a Copper Beech (Fagus sylvatica) at one end and a mature camellia (Camellia japonica) at the other end. Self-catered picnics welcome

Lovely gardens with a lot to see. Picnic spots available with tables and chairs. Quite a few water features so you need to watch the kids. Currently R50 entrance fee. If you're a fan of flowers and gardening then this is a must see. Overnight stays also available. Close to Jonkershoek Nature Reserve.

A real hidden gem in Stellenbosch! I’m so glad I saw an article where someone recommended this place! Take a picnic and a book and go enjoy an afternoon here! The gardens are beautiful- so so well kept and beautiful! Had a lovely afternoon here. It’s R50pp, I’d bring cash as there’s no cellphone signal and they don’t have a card machine, otherwise you’ll have to do an eft at home. If I’m ever in Stellenbosch again, this spot is on my list!!

I really liked the gardens. the grass looked good and 'healthy'. all the different flowers that are in bloom made the garden 'glow'. I really enjoyed the guided tour with Richard who really knows his plants and I found the history of the garden very interesting. even though the garden is privately owned I liked that it is more about people visiting the garden than generating income. I will definately come back in the summer and bring friends and family for a picnic.
