About the garden

Helmingham Hall has been in the hands of the Tollemache family since 1487, and the building itself was completed in 1510, though the moat which surround the garden pre-dates this by centuries. The site is renowned for its beautiful, Grade 1 listed gardens, which were redesigned over 25 years by Lady Xa Tollemache herself (a Chelsea Gold Medal winner). These gardens are at the heart of the 400 acre estate, which mostly comprises a deer park around the Tudor Hall.

The herbaceous bedding across the walled kitchen, rose, herb, knot and wild gardens are very popular with visitors, and their scale is quite magnificent, with thousands of blooms intermingling to create a collage of texture and colour that beautifully complements the house itself. Elsewhere, the more formal parterre and hybrid musk gardens feature structured topiary forms and impeccably kept hedging. There are several collections of fruit trees on the site, with both an orchard and and apple tree walk, the latter being lined with blossom in May and really quite spectacular to behold.

Visitors will be pleased to discover the charming Tea Rooms in the old Coach House, next to the Stable Shop - the perfect place to pick up a delicious slice of cake at the end of a long day in the garden.

Christmas lights night. Went last year and it wasn't as good this year. It was set up back to front this time and this meant stopping for drinks and food at the start. We had an 8.30 slot and it's not long enough to do it all. I wish we'd got there earlier and looked at the bits for sale first as they were closing as we left. Leave about 1.15 to 1.30 to do the trail. Wear boots with treads as it's really muddy. Lights are beautiful, especially the round bushes with the house in the background. Some bits on the fairy walk towards the disco balls were a bit tacky, like a string of hedgehog lights just laying on the ground. In the umbrella garden none of the watering cans were working which was a shame but what a great idea and a massive line of wellies was brilliant. Think I'll look to go somewhere different next year though as two years in a row is a bit samey. Definitely recommend though. Very reasonably priced. Beautiful location and grounds.

Another fantastic visit to the helmingham hall Christmas light show. This is our second year and would recommend to young and old alike. Great setup with beautiful displays built around the already impressive garden's and hall.

Our second visit was just as good as the first in 2019. From the lads in the drizzle in the car park, to the staff taking our tickets, the ladies in the mulled wine cabin and the shop staff everyone was friendly and cheerful, just as before. The addition of the stalls to complement the shops was a nice touch, as was reversing the direction of the trail. Seeing whole families there, with the children so entranced by what must seem magical to them, was such an additional pleasure. An excellent distraction from the outside world.
