About the garden

Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden has survived two world wars and the threat of a housing development, but luckily for us, a group of locals stepped in to save it.

Thanks to the Grappenhall Heys Walled Garden Conservation Group, the woodlands, ponds and ornamental pleasure gardens now offer a foliage-framed glimpse into what life was like on this country estate back when it was first created in 1830.

Grappenhall is really two gardens in one: one created to supply the kitchen and one designed for scenic strolling. For a glance of the Good Life, follow your belly to the kitchen garden where organically grown butternut squash, potatoes, apples and plums sit ripening at any one time. Or get your camera ready and head beyond the manicured Yew Hedge, where curving pathways and open lawns are fringed by herbaceous borders in hues of pinks, yellows and electric greens.

The two gardens also share the site with eight enviably spacious Victorian glasshouses, a number of outbuildings, and three wildlife ponds. A family-run café keeps visitors fed and watered.

Well maintained but very little to see at the moment. Opens from 12 noon to 4pm daily an extra hour at weekends. Cafe closed when we called mid-week but I hear it is very nice.

A beautiful 'secret' garden in Warrington. Brilliant service of coffee and cake too in the tearoom. They do afternoon teas too but £20 per person I think is a bit on the expensive side. Lovely place to visit though.

Picked a hot summer's day to walk around this beautiful walled garden. It is the perfect place for a picnic, besides the water, under the shade of a mature tree. There is a cafe in the grounds serving sandwiches, cakes and beverages. The garden is free to enter too We spent a couple of hours here. I look forward to returning soon to claim that perfect picnic spot.

Absolutely dreadful experience. Dropped by the beautiful gardens on my lunch break. Cafe is usaully very busy and so it was today. Arrived at 12:10 and waited at the entrance to the outside seating area as per the instructions. I waited over 5 minutes before anybody even acknowledged me despite looking over. I was then told that they where fully booked for lunch (which was not a problem may I add) and so I asked for a take away alternative, to which I as told they only accommodate for coffee and cake take away. I placed an order at 12:17 for a coffee and a cake and was still waiting at 12:25. At this point, another customer approached with a child and was seen to almost immediately. They too hadn't booked a table, however, they where we offered a table for coffee and cake. Even still I did not complain but by 12:35 there was still no sign of the coffee and cake I had ordered and so I left. Unbelievably poor customer service.

Great cuppa, scone with jam and clotted cream. Seat pads enabling us to sit in the winter sunshine 🌞. Thoroughly recommend 👌
