About the garden

Fonmon Castle is one of a small handful of castles to be continually occupied since it was built in 1180.

We offer our visitors acres of beautiful formal and informal gardens and have a successful historical day visitor attraction and dino-park, 'Step Through Time'. The grounds and Victorian Ravine Garden boast many superb mature specimen trees, mapped recently by a local expert. We are running a large nature project, 'Step Into The Wild' linked with the South Wales Nature Trust, and have just opened The Lookout Post, an outdoor classroom for families and groups to learn about the wildlife at Fonmon. We have seven different habitats, two of which are Sites of Special Scientific Interest and several large colonies of bats!

We host ghost tours, musical events, regular quiz nights and our own in-house caterers, 'Real Pride Of Wales' use produce from the kitchen gardens and carefully chosen Welsh ingredients to produce delicious locally-sourced meals and afternoon teas. We have just reopened as an events venue, offering elegant settings for meetings and parties. We are currently installing a model railway to take guests on trips around the garden, and are developing a sculpture trail, and a sensory garden.

We host re-enactment groups during the summer, and have traders selling wares as well as our own traders in the medieval village. At Christmas we light up the grounds, and have a big festival of light and sound, with seasonal food and drinks.
