About the garden

With over 100 acres of grounds (referred to locally as the property’s ‘policies’) and a rich variety of both wild and cultivated spaces to explore, Dunninald is a very special family residence which is open to the public in the summer months. Situated on the Angus coastline, just 3 miles south of Montrose, vast gardens extend outwards from the gothic castle, which is from the early 19th century, but the estate itself dates back at least 1000 years.

When the property opens in spring time, the wild garden is not to be missed, with snowdrops, daffodils and bluebells, but it’s also worth noting that the area is home to some of the UK mainland’s few remaining wild Red Squirrels.

In summer, the south-facing walled garden is a perfect spot to soak up the sunshine, rich in colour and varied in plants throughout the summer season. At the end of a great beech avenue, the high walls enclose a sheltered space which is planted with traditional mixed borders, roses, vegetables, herbs, fruit trees and soft fruits - there’s even a greenhouse. Visitors will be also delighted by the ornate entrance gate, with ironwork symbolising each of the 4 home nations.

Took a walk with the dog and after seeing the castle online thought it would be a nice little walk. As I arrived there were no signs or information to say private grounds, took a walk to the castle and was confronted by an uptight woman, enraged that we would look at the castle as its "their home". She said the grounds will be open in summer and we can come back and pay then to have a look... I wouldn't waste your money, horrible person and there's nicer places to go like House of Dun nearby.

Great tour and visit round the walled gardens and paths. The house is a time capsule and is still home to the family. The walled garden is a gem and there are many things to uncover and find on your way along the woodland paths.

Loved our visit, hadn't known castle tours were closed, this however didn't spoil our visit walked round the walled garden taking loads of photos with my grand children who had a brilliant time. Looking forward to a return visit for castle tour, and woodland walk.
