About the garden

Bates Green Garden is a tranquil 1.5-acre garden adjacent to a 6-acre wildflower meadow with views of the South Downs. Bates Green Garden was designed and planted by the skilled plantswoman, Carolyn McCutchan from 1968 until her death in 2019. The garden surrounds the farmhouse which was originally a gamekeeper’s cottage built circa 1814. The soil is neutral pH heavy clay. The garden is most easily described as an English garden planted in a naturalistic style, unique in its selection of many unusual plants including mature trees and shrubs. It continues to evolve featuring colourful and imaginative plantings. The distinct areas of the garden offer a sensory experience with bulbs, grasses, herbaceous and woody plants providing scent, colour and texture throughout the seasons. The wildflower meadow has a mown path through its 6 acres with seating available. The garden is a peaceful place to immerse oneself, full of birdsong, with restful places to sit, view and appreciate this unique garden. There is also the opportunity to walk around Beatons Wood, an ancient 24-acre oak and hornbeam woodland with beauty all year round. Bates Green Garden has been owned b y the McCutchan family for over 100 years.
