You can't enter the castle, but the surroundings are nice as hell to hike.

Lovely walk around the lake but lots of litter. Only saw litter bins around car Park. Toilets are now open. Small cafe is open now but I had worst hot chocolate I've ever had there too so don't recommend that.

Amazing place for family picnic, forest walk or kayaking. Beautiful gardens where you can see even red giant trees from California. Great nature trails with nice views. You have to try as well real maze. Big car park, café, playground. Forest entrance fee £5 - for cars

Castlewellan castle built by the Annesley family between 1856 and 1858. Now this is government property. Since 1974, after standing empty for ten years, the castle has been used as a Christian conference centre. Very impressed place, beautiful gardens, lake and castle. Unfortunately the Maze was closed because of Covid-19 restrictions.

Castlewellan is such a gem of County Down. The castle itself is a conference centre, and not open to public. But the grounds surrounding it are beautiful, with views over the lake. Walking around the lake is nice, and might take you approx. An hour/hour and a half. But the real beauty of castlewellan is off the beaten track. There are beautiful view points above the castle, through the forest, giving spectacular views of the Mournes, dundrum bay, and right across County Down. Play park and hedge maze are great for the kids too!
