The marmalade hoverfly is an orange and black insect belonging to the hoverfly family. They're a common resident in gardens, and if they're not seen hovering around garden plants, they'll be basking in the sun on their favourite flowers. They're a distinctive fly, with no other species displaying similar patterning in the UK. The adults are nectar drinkers, doing a considerable amount of pollination each day they're present. Likewise, the larvae are predacious and aggressive hunters of aphids, so they provide some pest control services too.

Hoverflies are considered one of the top beneficial insects to have in the garden.

These are pretty hoverflies. They possess a black straight band paired a 'moustached shaped' band, and both these are separated by orange. This kind of banding isn't seen in any other British hoverfly species. They can vary between 6-10.25mm.

The range of this species covers Europe, North Asia and North Africa.

Biological treatment

Hoverflies are termed beneficial insects because of the services they can provide in the garden, such as pollination and pest control. For this reason, hoverflies should not be removed from the environment if helped.

Chemical treatment

It's not advised to treat gardens for hoverflies.

These hoverflies are attracted to open habitats such as fields, roadside verges and gardens.
